New Organization Launches Non-Profit and Reaches Out to the World

MENLO PARK, CA — March 16, 2009 — Equalnox, a new non-profit focused on promoting equality rights for all, today announced its official launch and seeks to establish March 21, 2009, the spring equinox, as the first annual “Day of Equality.”

Equalnox has started a countdown on its website at www.equalnox.org and invited people from all walks of life through its various social networking pages at Facebook, Twitter, My Space, and others to join and spread the word to their friends to participate and be counted speaking for equality.

The organization hopes to leverage the voices of people from all over the world to join and bring the first “Day of Equality” to life using the power of social networks. Equalnox founder Shawn Cunningham had this to say, “What we are really trying to do is to empower the individual to speak up for themselves and each other and take back the right to be you, and to establish a day that presents everyday people with a time to reflect on what equality should really mean for all of us as human beings.”

Equalnox was founded to promote the concept of equality for all regardless of race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. Throughout history the majority has often restricted the rights of minority groups seeking to dictate who could marry, who could vote, what spiritual belief was ok to believe, and so forth.

Equalnox seeks to voice the rights of the individual, and everyone’s right to be who they are – the path to true equality. “The reality is, is that when the rights of any of us as human beings are infringed, the rights of all of us are diminished,” said Shawn Cunningham, “We believe we can help to change the argument for equality issues across the spectrum, whether defending your right to believe in a particular faith, or none at all, or your right to marry whom you choose as a consenting adult, real equality means letting people be who they are and not imposing your version of the human experience on them.”

Equalnox is proud to be the first non-profit to attempt to use social networks to create a day of reflection for equality, and intentionally announced the event today to see how far and fast the idea could spread in a short time. The new non-profit is planning future events to promote progressive perspectives on equality, which will be announced on its website.
